Building a Party for the People
The Orleans Parish Democratic Executive Committee (OPDEC) organizes the party at the parish level.
They run candidates for state and local office. They build relationships with advocacy groups. They inform policy.
Orleans Parish Democrats had an exceptionally-low, 31% turnout during the 2023 Governor's election.
Out of the approximately 168,000 registered Democrats, only around 51,000 showed up to the polls. Would Republicans have skated to victory if we turned out the other 117,000 registered Democrats?
There is undeniable popular support for common-sense solutions to pressing issues such as abortion rights, wages, insurance, LGBTQ+ liberation, mass incarceration, housing, healthcare, climate change--the list goes on!
Why has our Democratic Party failed to harness this energy and turn it into electoral victories?
There is a major disconnect between our party's leadership and its constituency; leadership is decidedly more conservative than the population on the issues, and voters are tired of seeing their votes not make an impact.
It's time for us to reinvigorate the Louisiana Democratic Party. We deserve a party that meets the people where they are and will take us where we want to go: a party that gives people something to vote for!
If you are:
a registered Democrat that's dissatisfied with what our party has been putting out...
an independent voter who wishes they had better, progressive choices...
someone who's given up on voting as a means for change...
Now is the time to get involved and build something better!
Register to vote as a Democrat, and on March 23, 2024 choose OPDEC and DSCC Members that will recruit, develop, and promote candidates that will represent the interests of everyday New Orleanians.
Restoring Reproductive Rights
Louisiana's abortion ban is a tyrannical attack on our civil rights and jeopardizes all maternal healthcare, which has already been a crisis in our state. This is especially true among Black Women, who make up a third of our city's population.
It must be repealed.
We need Democrats who will take an unwavering stance in support of reproductive rights.
Making the Minimum Wage a Living Wage
MIT's annual Living Wage study states that a single person in Orleans Parish needs to make at least $19.68 per hour to meet a minimum standard of living. And that figure doesn't include money for savings and leisure, so it actually should be higher to account for those expenditures.
More than half our population makes less than that.
We need Democrats who will raise the state minimum wage, allow cities to set their own minimum, and adjust for inflation annually.
Investing in Public Services & Infrastructure
My generation has grown up watching our governments neglect our infrastructure, defund our public services, and chase a "trickle-down" fantasy and that has rendered our society weak and crumbling.
We need Democrats who won't squander our wealth on exploitative tax giveaways to the world's biggest corporations in the form of ITEP and PILOTs. We should be investing that money directly into our schools, streets, transit, housing, and utilities.
Defending LGBTQ+ Rights
Our new governor and his allies are bigots who are obsessed with promoting oppressive laws that enforce conformity to their dimwitted understanding of gender and sexuality. It is every person's right to be whoever they want to be. It is every person's responsibility to mind their business and treat all others with respect and dignity.
We need Democrats who will repeal Louisiana's repugnant "Don't Say Gay" law and transgender healthcare ban.
